Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARNA) announced that lorcaserin will be featured in multiple presentations at Obesity 2009, the 27th Annual Scientific Meeting of The Obesity Society in Washington, DC. The line-up includes a late-breaking abstract oral presentation of results from BLOSSOM (Behavioral modification and LOrcaserin Second Study for Obesity Management), a Phase 3 trial for which Arena reported positive, highly significant top-line results in September.

Obese patients treated in office-based medical practices were twice as likely as normal-weight patients to develop conditions associated with heart disease, a new study has found. Researchers evaluated data collected by primary care and other office-based physician practices across the United States for a five-year period to identify whether obese patients developed hypertension, high triglycerides/low HDL, and diabetes more often than patients whose weight was considered normal.

In the study, “Snacking in Children: The Role of Urban Corner Stores,” researchers conducted more than 800 interviews on children in grades 4 through 6, from 10 urban elementary schools in which half or more of the students receive free or reduced-price meals. The students were interviewed outside 24 corner convenience stores before and after school.
